The CourseSpeed application, originally tailored for maritime navigation, possesses versatile functionality suitable for various outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and geocaching. Its design emphasizes the integration of critical navigational data—Course, Speed, and Position—on a single, prominently displayed screen, optimized for visibility from several feet away on an iPhone device. In addition to this primary display, the app offers multiple supplementary views that enhance usability and data management.

The primary map view allows users to follow their current position across three different map types. It supports turn-by-turn navigation with voice prompts leading to any destination, with historical track data and user-defined waypoints visually represented along the route. These tracks and waypoints can be saved into files for later retrieval and analysis.

It enables the addition of custom Points of Interest (POIs) on the map, which are stored separately from track waypoints and can be edited or deleted. POI data persists across sessions by being saved to files upon app closure.

The app facilitates exporting track data in GPS Exchange Format (GPX), allowing interoperability with other mapping tools or software for detailed review outside the app environment. Additionally, it provides astronomical information related to sunrise, sunset, solar azimuth, and elevation for any specified date to support outdoor planning.

A Horizon Distance Calculator feature estimates visible range based on observer height and object height, aiding in environmental assessment. Users can add a marked point to the map that displays real-time speed-made-good and bearing information—particularly useful for sailing, hiking, or geocaching activities.

For maritime users, the app includes a Speed-Made-Good-To-Windward indicator and an "Anchor Watch" function to monitor if a vessel's anchor is dragging. It also offers a geocaching search feature using user-entered markers as potential cache locations.

The application allows management of files related to tracks and GPX data, including renaming or deleting stored files. Several user preferences—such as smoothing options, coordinate formats, display modes, map type selection, and specific navigational parameters—are automatically saved upon adjustment and restored on subsequent launches for a tailored experience.

Designed to adapt visually, the app supports both "Light" and "Dark" themes consistent with iOS system settings. A companion Apple Watch app enhances accessibility; it provides a simplified interface displaying key metrics like position, accuracy, course, speed, altitude, odometer readings for two trips, distance and bearing to user-defined markers, track management controls, local sunrise/save times, all within a compact layout suitable for glanceable information. The watch app supports a dedicated complication that displays sunrise and sunset times directly on the watch face.
